CALL DIRECTOR 2019
Introduction
The International Theatre Festival Fantasio is a festival dedicated to the role of the director.
From the 2017 edition, Fantasio returned to its birthplace, Theatre of Villazzano, where it started 21 years ago, which will reopen after 10 years of closure.
The selected directors will be hosted for 15 days in the organization’s facilities in Trento (expenses covered includes accommodation, rehearsal rooms, contribution to food costs).
Directors will have to develop a piece no longer than 15 minutes working on the same script. At each director will be assigned a number of actors selected by the organization board through a specific call. The directors’ pieces will be presented to a jury and to the public on the 4th December and the 5th of December 2019 in the Theatre of Villazzano.
Fantasio will not end with the prize giving, the participants of the festival will have the opportunity to propose its own shows for the following Fantasio’s seasons of the Theatre of Vilazzano.
The winner will be proclaimed by the jury and will receive a 1.500,00€ prize.
The competition is open to all adult directors and aspiring directors residing in Europe.
The selection procedure for the participating directors will be structured into four phases:
1. Directors’ pre-selection – (from a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 30 participants)
Participants will be selected on the basis of the material requested in the application procedure (self-introduction video, videos of past plays and/or productions) plus the Curriculum Vitae.
2. Communication of the script
The script will be identical for everybody, but different from the one used in the official competition. Pre-selected directors shall prepare a performance (mise en scène) proposal to present to the selection board in a Skype or FaceTime interview.
3. Individual meeting (interview)
An individual meeting will take place with every director after 5 days from the communication of the script (see above). During the interview, each director will present its own staging proposal.
4. Final selection
The final selection will be based on the assessment of the staging proposal.
Participants are free to choose the edition, translation and language for the script’s presentation and mise en scène. This conditions apply both to the selection procedure and to the official competition.
During the official competition, every director shall set the stage according to two main obligations.
1.The piece can be no longer than 15 minutes, otherwise it will be disqualified.
2.The script may only be altered within the limits given by the organization board at the beginning of the Festival.
Participants will have complete freedom as for the preparation and production of the play, using their imagination, creativity and potential to the fullest.
Each and every play will be presented to the Jury and the public on the 4th and 5th December 2019 in the Theatre of Villazzano.
The assessment criteria for the final competition will be:

Technique and theatrical skills;

Ability to provoke emotions;

Capacity to elaborate an harmonious performance;

Ability to work and interact with the actors assigned;

Every other element that the Jury will consider relevant.
The Jury’s verdict is to be considered irrevocable.
REGULATION
ARTICLE 1 – Application procedure
The application procedure consists in a registration form which will be uploaded in the official website of the Festival www.festivalregia.com. The application is open to all the adult directors residing in Europe. The final deadline for submitting the application will be the 25th of August 2019 (open until midnight the same day). The registration to the Festival is free of charge.

- First phase:

A LINK TO THE SELF-INTRODUCTION VIDEO ON VIMEO OR YOUTUBE.
We kindly request you to upload a video on VIMEO or Youtube which shall be no longer than 10 minutes and no shorter than 3 minutes.
- Second phase
In the same section, you will be able to upload your CV, which shall be provided in a .pdf format and contain at least one photo of you (in a .jpeg format).
IMPORTANT - the self-introduction video MUST:
a) be public, not private.
b) be capable of being embedded in other websites.
You can set these options in the Privacy section of your video on VIMEO or Youtube.
The visual quality of the video will not be considered in the selection process. However, we kindnly suggest you to upload a good quality video for a smoother selection procedure.
ARTICLE 2 – Selection of the participants
The selection procedure for the participating directors will be structured into four phases:

The Skype interview will be held on Saturday, 7th September 2019, and Sunday, 8th September 2019. Each director will have a 5 days to prepare a staging proposal on the selected script.
The content of the script will be communicated by the organization board on
Monday 2nd September for those who will have the interview on Saturday 7th September 2019 and on Tuesday 3rd for those who will have the interview on Sunday 8th September 2019.
The interview between the examining commission and the director will be an online interview on Skype or FaceTime. We therefore ask you to find a stable and functioning Internet connection.
For those who may prefer it, we will also give the possibility to carry out a face-to-face interview in the main seat of EstroTeatro, the address being Via Venezia 1, Trento. The interview will take place on Saturday, 7th September 2019. Travel expenses will not be covered.
4. Final selection
The final selection will be based on the directors’ staging proposal presented during the individual interview and will allow only 8 participants to access to the official competition. The Jury’s verdict is to be considered irrevocable.
ARTICLE 3 – Duration of the Festival
From the 20th of November to the 5th of December 2019, in Trento.
ARTICLE 4 – The Script
The script selected for the official competition will be communicated a few days before the beginning of the Festival. Every director shall produce a piece according to the following conditions:
1. The piece shall not be longer than 15 minutes, otherwise it will be disqualified.
2. The script may be altered only within the limits outlined by the organization board, which will be communicated at the beginning of the festival.
Besides, participants are invited to use their utmost fantasy, creativity and potential during the production and staging phases of their final piece
ARTICLE 5 – The Actors
Participating actors will be selected by the organization board by means of a specific call, which will be available on the website of the Festival (at the following link www.festivalregia.com).
ARTICLE 6 – Accommodation
Participating directors will be hosted for the whole duration of the Festival (15 days) and will receive a contribution for food expenses. They will also be able to use the organization’s rehearsal rooms and facilities in EstroTeatro (in centre of Trento) and Villazzano to work on their play.
Working groups, timetables and work spaces arrangements will be defined and communicated on the first day.
ARTICLE 7 – The Jury
The Jury’s assessment criteria are the following:

Ability to work and interact with the actors assigned;

Every other element that the Jury will consider relevant.
The Jury’s verdict is to be considered irrevocable.
ARTICLE 8 – Technical Equipment
Directors may only use the technical equipment provided for by the organisation board, consisting in:
-
Overhead light (fixed and not movable), identical for every participant;
- Four spot lights with four dimmer channels (movable, compatibly with the needs of the other directors);
- Sound desk including: CD drive, slots for laptops and portable devices (MP3, i-Pad).
ARTICLE 9 – The Theatre
On the final day, the participating directors will be able to use the main Theatre in Villazzano from 10.00 am. Each director will be allowed to use the Theatre for no longer than two hours with respect to the timetable set by the organisation board.
ARTICLE 10 – Prize
The winner will receive a prize of 1.500,00€.
Besides, the organisation board may decide to award special prizes (audience’s prize, Juveniel Jury’s prize, etc.).
